Lettering and Storytelling

I’ve always been interested in exploring the role that lettering plays in the panel or sequential art forms. Text elements are often used in graphic novel composition as background scenery, stage architecture and occasionally even as the main character of the scene. The dynamical nature of these text-based elements is something I have decided to explore with a series of paintings.

The first cnvas piece I created that contained text elements reminiscent of those used in the graphic novel storytelling style was actually a rework from an illustration I had completed many years earlier. in the earlier illustration I had begun to explore the composition of dynamic background, character in for-shortened perspective, and text. I ran into the limitation of the medium while attempting to add depth to the scene using color rather than line and ink. I did not achieve the result I was ultimately hoping for but the illustration did turn out fairly well as a stand alone work.
